Multi-Layer Security Architecture

Bullish's custody solution implements comprehensive protection through three distinct layers:

Hardware Safeguards: The majority of customer assets are stored offline in cold wallets, with all private keys isolated from one another and stored either completely offline or in secure hardware modules on shielded cloud servers. This air-gapped approach prevents remote attacks on private key material.

Software Safeguards: All custody software components and operating systems are cryptographically signed and attested, ensuring integrity and preventing tampering. Multi-signature wallet schemes distribute signing authority across independent actors for collusion resistance. Blockchain-based oracles verify the provenance of all custody actions and prevent man-in-the-middle attacks on transaction signing.

Operational Safeguards: Comprehensive policies govern which crypto wallets can interact with one another, what keys are required to sign transactions, and limits on transaction size and velocity. Disaster recovery procedures include globally distributed backup keys, ensuring asset recoverability even in catastrophic scenarios.

Wallet Architecture

The custody infrastructure employs a sophisticated wallet architecture spanning cold, warm, and hot wallets:

Cold Wallets: The vast majority of customer assets reside in cold storage, completely offline and inaccessible to network-based attacks. Cold wallets are used for long-term storage of assets not actively being traded.

Warm Wallets: Intermediate storage for assets being prepared for trading activity, with controlled access and multi-signature requirements.

Hot Wallets: Minimal asset balances maintained in hot wallets for immediate trading execution, deposits, and withdrawals. Hot wallet balances are continuously monitored and automatically replenished from warm storage as needed.

Whitelisting Protocol: All transfers between wallet tiers follow strict whitelisting protocols, ensuring maximum protection against loss or theft. Every transfer is carefully monitored and requires appropriate authorization levels.

BitGo Integration: BitGo serves as a qualified custodian and regulated trust company, bringing deep expertise in the crypto custody space since 2013. BitGo's institutional-grade custody infrastructure provides battle-tested security and compliance frameworks.

Fireblocks Integration: Fireblocks provides cutting-edge digital asset custody, transfer, and settlement technology. As the first company certified as a Cryptocurrency Security Standard (CCSS) Level 3 Qualified Service Provider (QSP), Fireblocks brings the highest industry certification to Bullish's custody operations.

Segregation and Full Reserve Operations

Customer assets are stored in omnibus custodial wallets that are strictly segregated from Bullish assets. The exchange operates as a full-reserve platform, maintaining customer assets in a consistent 1:1 ratio. Bullish does not lend out customer assets or use them for proprietary trading or investing purposes.

Daily Reconciliation: The platform runs daily reconciliations to confirm that the amount of customer assets in custody exactly matches customer account balances, ensuring continuous audit trails and accountability.

API Access for Custody Operations

Institutional clients can access deposits and withdrawals programmatically via API, enabling seamless integration with proprietary treasury management systems and automated fund flows.
