Overview

Monerium (Monerium hf.) is a pioneering fintech company headquartered in Reykjavík, Iceland, founded around 2018-2019. It is the world's first authorized Electronic Money Institution (EMI) licensed for blockchain operations, having received its e-money license from Iceland's Financial Supervisory Authority of the Central Bank of Iceland in June 2019. The company bridges traditional finance with decentralized technologies by issuing regulated, asset-backed e-money tokens on public blockchains.

Core Products/Services

Monerium's flagship product is EURe, the first fully authorized and regulated euro stablecoin. EURe is backed 1:1 by high-quality liquid euro reserves held in segregated accounts, and is available across major blockchain networks including Ethereum, Polygon, Gnosis, Arbitrum, Base, Linea, and Noble. It complies with MiCA (Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation) and follows ERC-20, ERC-2612 Permit, and ERC-1271 smart contract standards.

The Monerium API enables developers and businesses to integrate onchain fiat payments into their applications. Core capabilities include account management, payment notifications with full sender details (IBAN, name, transaction message), direct SEPA transfers from blockchain addresses to bank IBANs, and full financial automation without exchange intermediaries. Monerium also provides an SDK (@monerium/sdk and @monerium/sdk-react-provider) and a sandbox testing environment at sandbox.monerium.dev.

The Web3 IBAN product gives blockchain wallets their own IBAN address, enabling instant, zero-fee SEPA transfers between traditional bank accounts and crypto wallets in 160+ countries. When euros are sent to a Monerium IBAN, they are automatically minted as EURe tokens on the designated blockchain address, and vice versa when EURe is redeemed.

Key Strengths

Monerium holds a unique regulatory position as the first EMI licensed for blockchain operations, making its stablecoin fully MiCA-compliant and passportable throughout the European Economic Area. Its smart contracts are audited by independent security firms. The company enables real-world use cases such as corporate treasury management, payroll automation, real-time delivery-vs-payment settlements, automated clearing and settlement, and payment collection from non-blockchain businesses with on-chain settlement.

Monerium's multi-chain approach — supporting Ethereum, Polygon, Gnosis, Arbitrum, Base, Linea, and Noble — and DeFi integrations with protocols like Aave, CowSwap, and Balancer make EURe one of the most interoperable regulated stablecoins available.

Notable Clients/Projects

In October 2019, Monerium completed the first invoice settlement using smart contracts and licensed digital cash, in collaboration with Tradeshift and IKEA Iceland. The company has institutional backing from Crowberry Capital, ConsenSys, Taavet Hinrikus (Wise co-founder), and Sten Tamkivi (Teleport founder), raising a $2M seed round in January 2019 and a $4M round in September 2021.

Why Choose Monerium

Monerium offers the only regulated euro stablecoin that combines a real banking IBAN with zero-fee SEPA connectivity, full MiCA compliance, and multi-chain availability. Businesses and developers can integrate regulated euro payments into their applications via a simple REST API and SDK, without needing to deal with exchange intermediaries. The Web3 IBAN feature enables seamless fiat-to-blockchain and blockchain-to-fiat flows, making Monerium the definitive infrastructure layer for euro-denominated onchain payments in Europe.
