UMA is a decentralized truth machine — an optimistic oracle (OO) protocol that can record any verifiable truth or data onto a blockchain. Developed and supported by Risk Labs Foundation, UMA has been live since 2020 and is widely regarded as a foundational piece of DeFi infrastructure, powering projects such as Polymarket, Across Protocol, Story Protocol, Rated, and Sherlock.
UMA's primary offering is its Optimistic Oracle (OO) — a dispute arbitration system that securely brings arbitrary types of off-chain data on-chain. The OO operates through a challenge period mechanism: data is proposed with a bond, and if undisputed within a liveness window, it is accepted as true. Disputes are escalated to UMA token holders who vote to resolve them, with correct voters earning rewards.
Two active versions of the optimistic oracle are available to builders:
UMA's optimistic design means the oracle is highly cost-efficient — the vast majority of data requests resolve without disputes, minimising gas costs for integrators. The protocol is modular and extensible, supporting arbitrary natural-language statements and custom bond/liveness parameters. UMA is secured by its decentralised community of UMA token holders who serve as the human layer for final dispute resolution, creating strong economic guarantees against corruption.
UMA's OO is used in production by leading Web3 protocols including Polymarket (prediction markets), Across Protocol (cross-chain bridge), Story Protocol (IP registry), Rated (validator reputation), and Sherlock (insurance/auditing). The protocol supports deployments across multiple EVM chains including Ethereum, Polygon, Base, Optimism, and others.
Builders who need to bring real-world or cross-chain data on-chain benefit from UMA's optimistic approach, which combines low costs, strong security guarantees, and the ability to verify any universally verifiable statement — not just price feeds. UMA's developer documentation, OO dapp, and active community support make it accessible to teams building prediction markets, insurance protocols, and cross-chain applications.
